ATX Visits Alpha Delta Pi Sorority at University of Texas
At ATX Nutritional Counseling, we are passionate about raising awareness and providing education on eating disorders. That’s why we were so excited when our owner, Maggie Stenson, had the opportunity to speak at Alpha Delta Pi sorority at The University of Texas at Austin.
Her talk focused on understanding eating disorders, recognizing signs and symptoms, how to support a loved one who may be struggling, and how to access resources.
Why This Conversation Matters
Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that affect people of all sizes, genders, and backgrounds. Unfortunately, college students—especially those navigating high-pressure environments, social expectations, and body image concerns—are particularly vulnerable.
Maggie’s goal was to educate and empower the members of Alpha Delta Pi by helping them recognize the signs of disordered eating and learn how to support themselves and their peers.
Key Takeaways from the Talk
Recognizing the Signs of Eating Disorders
Eating disorders don’t always look the way people expect. Maggie explained that while weight changes can sometimes occur, eating disorders are more about a person’s relationship with food, body image, and emotions.
Some common warning signs include:
✔️ Skipping meals or rigid food rules
✔️ Preoccupation with food and body
✔️ Excessive or compulsive exercise
✔️ Feeling guilt or shame after eating
✔️ Avoiding social events involving food
How to Support a Friend Who May Be Struggling
One of the most important parts of the discussion was how to be a source of support for friends who may be dealing with disordered eating. Maggie encouraged the group to:
💙 Approach conversations with compassion, not judgment
💙 Avoid making comments about weight or appearance
💙 Encourage professional help from a dietitian or therapist
💙 Foster a supportive environment where all bodies are respected
